Eligible children missing out on state insurance

Tens of thousands of Kentucky children have no health insurance even though they are eligible for a state program that provides coverage for kids with low-income, working parents, according to a report released today.
The Kentucky Voices for Health reports that more than 60,000 children who are eligible for the Medicaid program known as Kentucky Children’s Health Insurance Program, or KCHIP, are not participating.
They are going without coverage because of a complicated application process and lack of recruitment by state officials who oversee the plan, said the report by the group that includes the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, Kentucky Youth Advocates and other health and advocacy groups.
They are calling on Kentucky to streamline the process and work harder to get more children into KCHIP to improve their health care and reduce the number of people in the state without health insurance.
KCHIP currently covers approximately 55,000 children.
