New Health Insurance Program For Children

Health officials are calling it the best kept secret in town, a new health insurance for children that you might be eligible for and not even know it.
Shreveport mother Whitney Pleasant is able to get free healthcare for her children under the Louisiana State Children's Health Insurance Program, also known as LaCHIP.
"I don't have to pay bills, it helps me with prescriptions."
Outside the County Market Grocery Store in Shreveport, health officals from Christus Schumpert and The Department of Health and Hospitals set up shop trying to sign up people who qualify.
Michelle White Lafitte with Christus Schumpert said "there are a lot of people that don't realize they qualify for lachip and lachip affordable plan."
Pleasant's children are two of about 2,500 in Caddo Parish alone that qualify for LaCHIP, which covers families of four making a gross household income of $41,300 or less.
But a new plan called the LaCHIP Affordable Plan would help people who make too much for regular LaCHIP but still can't afford the high cost of healthcare for their children.
The new LaCHIP Affordable Plan is for families of four with a gross household income of $53,00 or less.
With this plan, families would pay a premium of $50 a month.
"This will help to fill in the gaps and give families so much relief for their children who are uninsured," said Michelle White Lafitte.
